NASA scientists said the images and data to be collected by the James Webb Space Telescope will be groundbreaking in our understanding of the universe.
“It’s going to be revolutionary,” Jane Rigby, an operational project scientist for the telescope, said at a news conference Tuesday. “These are previous abilities that we’ve never had before.”
Her comments come after NASA released five new images with never-before-seen detail of exoplanets, stars, nebulae and galaxies in the universe.
Rigby said she cried tears of joy after seeing the first images captured by Webb.
“It was a combination of being giddy like, ‘Oh my God, this is great,’ and sobbing like, ‘Oh my God, this is working,'” she said.
