The New Orleans Saints kicked off in May with a free security agent, Tyrant Mathieu. The Saints are now signing five-time Pro Bowl successor Jarvis Landry for a one-year contract. Landry posted the news on social media on Friday afternoon.
Landry visited the Saints before the NFL 2022 draft. New Orleans spent its first of two rounds in the first round against former Ohio successor Chris Olav. The Saints further strengthened their host corps with the acquisition of Landry, a Pro Bowl performer during his time with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns.
The 29-year-old Landry was a professional bowler in three of his four seasons in Miami while helping the Dolphins win a place in the playoffs in 2016. The former LSU Tiger was important to the Browns’ turnaround when he came to Cleveland in 2018. Two-time professional bowler with the Browns, Landry’s impact on the field and in the locker room helped Cleveland end the 18-year drought for the franchise’s playoffs three years after the franchise ran a regular 0-16 season. The secure receiver caught touchdowns in both Browns games in the post-2020 season.
Knee injury, along with Baker Mayfield’s injury problems, led Landry to post low career levels in receptions (52), yards (570) and touchdown receptions (2) in 2021. In New Orleans, Landry will work with Olive and Michael Thomas, a two-time All-Pro who missed the entire 2021 season due to injury. The Saints’ offense also includes running back Alvin Camara, a professional bowler in each of his first five seasons in New Orleans.
Landry will catch passes from James Winston, who led the Saints to a 5-2 record last season before an injury prematurely ended his season. Despite Winston’s loss, the Saints finished the 2021 season with a record of 9-8, until shortly after the postseason. The Saints certainly hope that their off-season gains will lead to a return to the playoffs in 2022.
