Jason Kenny to remain UCP leader until a successor is selected

Jason Kenny will remain leader of the United Conservative Party until his successor is elected.

A statement issued by UCP group chairman Nathan Neudorf on Thursday said the one-day meeting in Calgary had “an energetic discussion and debate” about the party’s future and the need to stay united.

“In this spirit, we have confirmed that Prime Minister Jason Kenny will continue to lead our group and government until a new leader is elected, to be determined by the United Conservative Party,” Neudorf said.

Past prime ministers Ralph Klein and Ed Stelmach remained leaders until their deputy was elected, but Alison Redford resigned as soon as he resigned.

Earlier Thursday, Kenny sent a letter “intending to resign as leader” to the UCP secretary, posting it on social media.

Dwayne Brother, a political scientist at Mount Royal University, said the Caucasus meeting took hours longer than it could have, and speculated that there were divisions over whether to attract an interim leader or allow Kenny to stay.

“And we don’t know when this replacement is,” he told Global News. “Is it September?” Is it October? Is it January? And what happens in the meantime? Jason Kenny remains prime minister. “

He also said things would be “really, really complicated” if an incumbent cabinet minister ran for party leadership while trying to distance himself from Kenny.

“They will have to defend Kenny’s record because they were sitting around the cabinet table,” he said, citing frequent attacks on Manitoba Prime Minister Heather Stephenson’s support for her predecessor’s policies.
