Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s show for the Super Bowl at half-time was widely praised, but it still had its detractors. This group apparently included Jennifer Lopez.
Two years after taking the stage at Super Bowl LIV, the multi-platinum pop star debuted “Halftime”, a documentary about her career that revealed some disappointments behind the scenes on the eve of the big show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the documentary captures Lopez outlining the show with music director Kim Burce as she begins to set out the basic idea of using co-headliners for the show at halftime:
“We have six minutes. We have 30 seconds of song and if we take a minute, that’s all, we have five left. But there still have to be some songs that we sing. We have to have our moments with singing. This will not be a dance show. We need to sing our message, “Lopez told Burse.” It’s the worst idea in the world to have two people in the Super Bowl. That was the worst idea in the world. “
Lopez later reportedly discussed the production with Shakira and suggested splitting the show in half, which the couple eventually did. Lopez suggests that 20 minutes would be more appropriate for a show with two titles:
“I know the people at Super Bowl want us to be involved throughout the show. I have not had confirmation of how many minutes I will have, “Shakira told Lopez, who replied:” Let me address this very quickly. They said 12 minutes. I got some good confirmation that we could have an extra minute or two, so now we’re about 13, 14 minutes. I think, Shakira, what we need to have is that you need to have half the time and you need to [have half]”
“If he was going to be a double headliner, they had to give us 20 minutes,” Lopez concluded. “That’s exactly what they had to do.”
Despite these complaints, the show ended up coming out great on most accounts. You can watch the whole work here:

Despite Lopez’s disappointment with the show with two headliners, the NFL apparently didn’t think there was a big problem, given that they booked five headliners for the Super Bowl LIV half-time two years later.
