PHILADELPHIA – The New York Jets’ preseason got off to the worst possible start as quarterback Zach Wilson injured his right knee on the second play and immediately limped into the locker room Friday night at Lincoln Financial Field.
Wilson’s knee appeared to buckle with a non-contact injury as he was coming out of the pocket on the turf, trying to outrun a Philadelphia Eagles prospect. He got off awkwardly. He limped to his feet but fell to the grass in obvious pain.
It’s the same knee that was injured last season. Wilson sprained his PCL in a Week 7 loss and would miss four games.
Wilson got off to a poor start against the Eagles, throwing an interception on the Jets’ fifth play. Four games later he was injured.
He was replaced by third stringer Mike White. The usual backup, Joe Flacco, got a break.
The Jets have high hopes for Wilson in his second year, confident he can improve after a rough rookie year. Their entire offseason was focused on Wilson, a second-round pick in 2021. The Jets upgraded their supporting cast with the belief that it would improve Wilson’s game.
