“The Democrats were pushing for a ban on weapons of attack, I said no,” Cornin said. “They tried to get a new three-week mandatory waiting period for all gun purchases,” I said no. Universal inspections, bans on magazines, licensing requirements, the list goes on and on. And I said no, no, 1000 times no. “
Cornin left Washington on Thursday without reaching an agreement to turn the weekend agreement into a valid legislative text. Lawmakers from both parties are facing pressure to act on gun safety legislation after the mass shootings, but it is unclear whether any package could overcome the Senate filibuster.
“So you can ask what’s on the table?” Cornin told the crowd on Friday. “More mental health resources, more support for our schools and ensuring that violent criminals and the mentally ill cannot buy firearms,” he said as the boos continued. “This primarily means implementing the current law. That’s what I’ve heard from many of you here today and this week, and that’s what we’re working on, nothing more and nothing less. “
He also said: “Under no circumstances will I support new restrictions on law-abiding gun owners. This will always be my red line. And despite what some of you may have heard, the framework we are working on is consistent with this red line. “
Cornin concluded this part of his speech by telling the crowd to go to his website to see his real positions, “not rumors and Twitterverse.”
“Now President Biden is not happy that our list does not include his extensive wish list, which tells me we need to do something right,” he said.
Cornin told reporters earlier this week that the two main obstacles in the framework are the so-called boyfriend’s door, which deals with whether unmarried partners could have guns if convicted of violence against a dating partner, and the allocation of funds for alternative crisis intervention programs, with Democrats wanting to use these funds to encourage countries to pass red-flag laws. Cornin also warned that if negotiations drag on, then the discussion could collapse without pushing.
“Indecision and delay threaten the likelihood of a bill because you can’t write what hasn’t been decided, and without a bill there’s nothing to vote for,” Cornin wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
