John Terry responded to Rio Ferdinand’s claim that the former Chelsea player is only the fifth best central defender in the history of the Premier League with the post “statistics do not lie”.

The 41-year-old footballer is considered one of the greatest defenders in the era of the highest qualification, after consistently performing at the highest level for almost two decades. He eventually won five Premier League titles and countless other trophies, including the 2012 Champions League.

Terry ended his career with 492 games in the highest class and is known by many as the most successful Chelsea captain in the history of the club. He also played 78 games for England before retiring from international football in 2012 to focus on his club career.

However, Ferdinand put three central defenders of Manchester United in front of Terry, including himself. The former Leeds United player discussed the top five central defenders in Premier League history with Liverpool’s Virgil van Jick ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final.

Ferdinand came in first with Nemanja Vidic in second, Van Jick third, Jaap Stam fourth and Terry at the bottom of the pile. Meanwhile, the Dutch international pulled himself out of the equation and also put Ferdinand in first place, followed by Vincent Company, Stam, Terry and Sami Hippie.

It was a debate that sparked some discussion on social media, and Terry disagreed with Ferdinand’s thoughts when analyzing the statistics behind all the Premier League defenders. In a story on Instagram, Terry posted a series of images and graphics containing various statistics to support him.

There was one that included the captains with the most Premier League titles and another that explained the central defenders with the highest winning rate in Premier League history. Terry also added a photo showing the top ten players who had the most FIFPRO World XI nominations.

All three were led by Terry among the central defenders and he wrote the publication “the opinions are great, but the statistics do not lie.” Another chart included Terry in the list of the most successful defenders of all time.

However, Ferdinand praised Terry as he explained his decisions to Van Jick. He claims to be a “much better footballer” than people say he has been since his time with Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

He said: “In terms of his longevity at this club, what they have won, the body of the line, a much better footballer than people attribute to him, can play with his left and right foot.”
