Depp is suing Hurd, his ex-wife, for defamation in connection with a 2018 publication she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although Depp is not mentioned in the article, he claims that it costs him lucrative acting roles. Hurd has filed a counterclaim against her ex-husband for defamation over Depp’s lawyer’s statements about her allegations of abuse.
Weighing the allegations, the jury found that both exes had slandered.
The jury awarded Depp $ 10 million in damages and $ 5 million in punitive damages. The jury awarded Hurd $ 2 million in damages and no damages. Depp demanded $ 50 million in damages and Hurd demanded $ 100 million. Virginia’s criminal compensation is limited to $ 350,000, so the judge reduced the criminal compensation awarded to that amount.
Hurd lowered his eyes as he read the sentence. Depp was not in court.
