Depp vs. Hurd: Some of the key points at the beginning of the process
If you are just coming to the Dep-Hurd case now, here is a selection of some of the key points from earlier in the process that will help you get to speed:
“Depp testified that he never hit Hurd or another woman.” He said she was the one who became abusive and “harassed” him with a “humiliating call by name”. “It seemed like pure hatred for me,” Depp said. “If I stayed arguing, in the end I was sure it would escalate into violence, and it often happened.”
– During a dispute in Australia in early 2015, Depp said that Hurd threw a bottle of vodka, which cut off the top of his right middle finger. The actor said he was shocked and wrote messages to Hurd on the wall using blood from his finger. Hurd offered a different story, sobbing as he told the jury that Depp sexually assaulted her that night by inserting a bottle of alcohol into her vagina. “I was scared,” she said. “I just married him.”
“A few months later,” Hurd said, Depp broke her nose and ripped pieces of her hair out during another violent encounter.
– Hurd’s lawyers presented photos that said they showed injuries after various disputes, including scars on her arm that were visible while posing on a red carpet, and redness and swelling around the eye, which she said was hit by a phone thrown from Dep. Depp’s lawyers showed photos of public appearances, which they said were taken during their battles and did not appear to show any injuries.
– Depp testified that the stool was found in the couple’s bed in 2016. One of the guards told him that Hurd had told him that it was “a terrible practical joke that went wrong.” Hurd denied any involvement and suggested that one of the couple’s dogs was responsible.
“Hurd said it was the first time Depp had physically assaulted her after she laughed at a Wino Forever tattoo.” Earlier, the tattoo said “Winona Forever”, referring to Depp’s ex-girlfriend, Winona Ryder.
– The jury heard an audio clip of Depp threatening to cut himself with a knife during one of their last personal meetings. “It’s psychologically, emotionally where I was,” Depp said. “I was finally broken … I thought the only answer was here, take my blood, that’s all I have left.”
– Hurd’s lawyers introduced text messages in which Depp called Hurd a “dirty whore” and said he wanted her dead. Writing to actor Paul Bethany in 2013, Depp said, “Let’s drown her before we burn her” and “I’ll fuck her burnt body afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”
