Kankakee death investigation: 3 bodies found at Kankakee home killed in apparent shooting at night, officials say

KANKAKEE, Ill. (WLS) – Police are investigating three people found dead at a home in Kankakee on Wednesday afternoon, city officials said.

Investigators said a relative called police after he went to a two-apartment home on Block 600 on West Merchant Street on Wednesday afternoon and found three men dead in an upstairs apartment with obvious gunshot wounds.

Respondents then called for reinforcements.

“Our officers secured the scene today and we did not enter the house until we learned that the Illinois state police had taken over the investigation,” said Kankaki Mayor Chris Curtis.

Investigators believe the shooting took place sometime Tuesday night to Wednesday. All three victims were pronounced dead on the spot. Kankaki police then sought the help of the Illinois state police crime scene services.

“There must be justice. Justice must be restored for the crimes committed in this house,” said Banichka Moore, the victim’s aunt. “What I feel now is confused.”

Kankaki police said all three victims had been identified, but their identities had not yet been revealed pending notification to all family members.

Friends and relatives of at least one of the men living in the home said the victim was 24 years old and very popular.

“He was a good kid. He was a great basketball player. He was a real athletic kid. I don’t understand what all this is about,” said a friend who asked to be identified only as Margarita.

No one seems to know what happened at home or who killed the men.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Kankakee Police at 815-933-0426.
