Keir Starmer is being investigated by Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for potential breaches of the rules on winnings and gifts.
The Labor leader is under investigation under paragraph 14 of the code of conduct for parliament, which covers the inclusion of their interests and “openness” in declarations.
The commissioner’s website, which announced the investigations on Monday, lists two issues under investigation regarding Sir Care’s behavior.
The first concerns the “registration of interests in category 1 of the Rulebook”, which concerns the external employment and income of Members.
The second concerns the “registration of interests in category 3 of the Rules Manual”, which refers to gifts, benefits and hospitality from UK sources collected by MEPs.
The Labor leader is one of three lawmakers currently under investigation by the Commissioner for Standards. The other two are Andrew Bridgen, a Tory MP who is under investigation for alleged paid advocacy – or lobbying – as well as issues related to his declaration of interests.
Another Conservative MP. Chris Philip is also being investigated by the oversight body for misusing his parliamentary email address.
It is unclear at this stage what exactly Sir Cair’s standards investigation is about. He had previously registered significant external profits for legal work before becoming a party leader.
Asked to respond to the news during a broadcast interview, Sir Cair said: “This is an investigation that we will respond to in due course.”
When asked what the investigation was about, he said, “I need to talk to my office about this, but we will respond in a timely manner.”
The Labor leader was asked if he was surprised by the news and said no.
Asked when he was notified of the investigation, he replied: “All MPs have been informed of any concerns and my office is dealing with this and we will respond in a timely manner.”
He added that he was “absolutely confident. There is no problem here.”
The Parliament’s Register of Interests seems to show that Sir Cair registered part of his foreign revenue and hospitality later than the 28-day deadline that all MEPs must meet.
These six late entries include copyrights from his books and football tickets and have a total value of £ 3,303.01.
In recent months, the opposition leader has sharply criticized Boris Johnson for violating the rules during the blockade, gaining a political stance on the issue.
