Kevin Spacey has been charged in the UK with four counts of sexual assault

LONDON (AP) – British prosecutors said Thursday they have indicted actor Kevin Spacey on four counts of sexual assault against three men.

The royal prosecutor’s office said Spacey “is also accused of forcing a person to engage in penetrating sexual activity without consent.”

The alleged incidents occurred in London between March 2005 and August 2008 and one in the West of England in April 2013. The alleged victims are now between 30 and 40 years old.

Rosemary Ainsley, head of the special services department of the service, said the allegations followed a review of evidence gathered by the London police.

Spacey, a 62-year-old double Oscar winner, was questioned by British police in 2019 about allegations by several men that he attacked them. The former House of Cards star directed London’s Old Vic Theater between 2004 and 2015.

Spacey won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 1995’s “The Usual Suspects” and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “American Beauty.”

His illustrious career came to an abrupt halt in 2017, when actor Anthony Rapp accused the star of attacking him at a party in the 1980s, when Rapp was a teenager. Spacey denies the allegations.

The charges in the UK were announced Thursday as Spacey testified in a New York courtroom in a civil lawsuit filed by Rapp. Spacey did not answer reporters as he left the courthouse, speaking on his cell phone.

Spacey’s lawyers appear to be familiar with the UK criminal case – briefly mentioned in court – but also did not comment on the new allegations in the UK when they left the building.

Another criminal case against Spacey, an indecent attack and a charge of battery resulting from the alleged groping of an 18-year-old man at a resort in Nantucket, was dropped by Massachusetts prosecutors in 2019.
