Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) on Sunday said it was “pretty crazy” if the Secret Service actually deleted text messages the day before and the day of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
Kinzinger, one of two Republicans sitting on a special House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot, told CBS “Face the Nation” anchor Margaret Brennan that the circumstances surrounding the missing messages remain to be determined.
“We’ll know more on Tuesday,” Kinzinger said, noting that the commission had issued a subpoena for the records, which the agency said were no longer available because of the device replacement.
Kinzinger said a Secret Service statement appeared to be “conflicting” because the agency said only some of the records were deleted and everything related to the investigation was turned over.

“It’s pretty crazy, to say the least, that the Secret Service would actually erase anything related to one of the most infamous days in American history, especially as it relates to the role of the Secret Service.”
Last month, the House panel heard testimony from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who said she heard that on Jan. 6, Trump lunged at the steering wheel and at an agent in his presidential car, demanding that he join his supporters at the Capitol.
Kinzinger said that while he would welcome a hearing directly from the Secret Service, the panel is unlikely to hear from anyone from the agency about testifying until its next hearing on Thursday.
