The United States to impose new sanctions, to ban all new investments in Russia

Washington must announce new US sanctions on Wednesday, which will ban all new investments in Russia, sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The measures will also sanction Russian state-owned enterprises and financial authorities, as well as Russian civil servants and members of their families, sources said.

The package of sanctions is being implemented in line with allies of the European Union and the G-7 in response to allegations of war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.

The EU is preparing new sanctions against Russia and is targeting coal imports

Russia is facing new EU sanctions after evidence emerged of alleged atrocities committed against civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

The EU must unveil new sanctions this week, which will include a ban on coal imports.

“We will ban the import of coal from Russia worth 4 billion euros ($ 4.39 billion) a year. That will reduce another important source of revenue for Russia, “European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday.

The EU imported 19.3% of its coal from Russia in 2020, according to the European Statistical Office.

Russian air strikes continue, humanitarian crisis in Mariupol worsens

Russian air strikes continue in the besieged eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, the UK Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday.

“The humanitarian situation in the city is deteriorating,” the ministry said in a statement posted on Twitter, adding that approximately 160,000 residents still locked up in the city have no electricity, heat, water or ability to communicate with the outside world.

Russian forces have blocked humanitarian access, the ministry said, describing it as an attempt to put pressure on the city to surrender.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on Russians to “find the truth” and “share it”.

“Your president has been accused of committing war crimes. But I can’t believe he’s acting on your behalf,” Johnson said in a video addressing the Russian people directly.

Speaking in both Russian and English, he said: “The atrocities committed by Russian troops in Bucha, Irpin and elsewhere in Ukraine have horrified the world.”

He went on to outline the alleged atrocities of Russian troops: killed civilians, raped women, burned bodies and “thrown into mass graves or simply left lying on the street.”

Ukrainian authorities say more than 300 civilians were tortured and killed by Russian troops in the city of Bucha near Kyiv, discoveries made only after Moscow withdrew from the area.

Graphic media images also revealed the corpses of civilians in the streets – some with their hands and feet tied – while satellite images captured mass graves.

Russia is waging an information war along with its military operations.

The Russian people have been “fed a constant propaganda diet” by Russian state media, according to Ken Dylanyan of NBC News. The Kremlin described the unprovoked and unjustified war in Ukraine as a “special military operation.”

“The reports are so shocking, so disgusting, that it’s no wonder your government is trying to hide them from you,” Johnson said.

“But don’t just take my word for it,” he added, urging them to access independent information through a VPN connection. “And when you find the truth, share it.

Intel joins a list of growing software companies that have stopped operations or deliveries to Russia, including Oracle, SAP and IBM.
