Leaks, rumors and everything we know so far

Although Apple has yet to make official dates, the iPhone 14 Series is expected to arrive in September. This year’s leaks have already hinted at a lot about the new iPhone 14 series, including major differences between the Pro and non-Pro models, the lack of a “mini” variant, and also a new design choice for Apple’s signature notch. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming iPhone 14 series so far.

No more minis

Leaks have suggested for months that the iPhone 14 series will not come in a compact “mini” variant. Apple has apparently decided to abandon the small iPhone due to weak sales and will not continue to produce them from the iPhone 14 series. While the flagship number series focuses on larger phones, Apple fans who want a compact device can now stay only with the iPhone SE-series.

Four new iPhone variants

Despite the lack of a “mini” variant, Apple will still make four different variants of the iPhone this year, just like the iPhone 12 and 13 series. However, a new iPhone 14 Max should debut this year alongside the usual vanilla Apple iPhone 14 lineup , iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. This will leave buyers with two choices for a large iPhone, as they will be able to get a larger iPhone without shelling out more money to get a “Pro” variant just for the size.

Different chipsets in the series

The iPhone 14 series could also be the first iPhone series where we might see different chipsets powering the Pro and non-Pro variants of the phone. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will only provide the new A16 Bionic chip to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max may still be powered by last year’s A15 chip or a variant of it with some changes.

Apple is also reportedly sourcing new components from Sony (for the camera) and LG (for the phone’s display) only for the Pro variants, suggesting that the non-Pro variants of the iPhone 14 may not get a major upgrade on the camera compared to last year too.

New “i-shaped” notch

The new iPhone 14-series is also reported to be the first to ditch Apple’s signature notch and instead implement a new i-shaped notch. This will feature a round hole cut out with a punch along with a longer pill shaped slot. While the hole is expected to house the front-facing camera, the pill-shaped notch could house the infrared sensors for Apple’s FaceID functionality.

However, we still don’t know if the new design will come to all four models or just the Pro variants.

As you can see, not much design difference is expected this year, except for the new notches. The phones will have the same metal chassis design and triple camera setup on the back.

The iPhone 14 Max may be in short supply at launch

The latest entry in the range, the non-Pro ‘Max’ variant, is expected to run out of units due to supply constraints. Analyst Ross Young suggested that shipments of displays for the new Max variant are far behind schedule. It also suggests we’ll see a unique display panel for the iPhone 14 Max, one that’s expected to be roughly the same size as the rumored 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with a different notch implementation.
