A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed in downtown Oldham in the early hours of Saturday. Detectives are questioning a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder after the Union Street incident.
Police were called around 4:20 a.m. Saturday by a Northwest ambulance to alert a man suspected of stab wounds. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, but was found dead on arrival.
Official identification has not yet been made, but police believe the victim is a man about 40 years old from Oldham. A Manchester police spokesman said initial investigations showed the victim had been stabbed after an altercation with a man close to the Light of Bengal restaurant.

After the incident, Metrolink’s services were suspended between Westwood and Rochdale town centere. Metrolink tweeted: “Due to a police incident, there is currently no service between Westwood and Rochdale’s Rochdale Town Center via Oldham Line. Acceptance of tickets for bus services – 59, 81, 83, 181, 182, 184, 409, 415, 471 and rail services between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale. “
