Meteorological services have issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in the southwest. The Exeter-based forecaster said we should expect an “area of lightning storms” with a warning from 2:51 p.m. this afternoon, June 18, until 7 p.m.
The warning means disturbances in the region in the coming hours. The Met Office says we should expect “short-term loss of power or other utilities” and “possible damage to some buildings / structures.”
An update from the Meteorological Service said: “A storm zone is expected to move to the north-east of the south-west and south of the south of England on Saturday afternoon. They can bring frequent lightning to objects for a short period of time before clearing northeast.
“A short period of heavy rain is also possible, but given the speed of movement, lightning is considered more likely to be dangerous. The most common lightning strikes are likely to be in parts of Cornwall and Devon.
Areas affected include Bath and Northeast Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Thorbay, Wiltshire and Hampshire.
