We will take you through the latest developments in Ukraine as they unfold, including an expected step forward in its EU accession efforts.
To speed you up, here’s the latest:
EU membership
The European Commission is expected to support the idea of granting Ukraine official candidate status in its application to join the EU. The commissioners are meeting to decide on their recommendation, with a communication expected later.
The leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Romania have already publicly backed Ukraine’s bid to join the EU, saying it should be given “immediate” candidate status.
All 27 EU leaders will discuss the issue at a summit on June 23rd and 24th. Some members have already expressed reservations.
Candidate status will be just the next step on Ukraine’s path to full EU membership, as French President Macron said earlier that it could take years.
Military developments
Ukraine has already lost up to half of its military hardware, the country’s deputy defense minister said.
Denis Sharapov called for more military aid as fierce fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with heavy losses on both sides.
On the spot, Ukraine says Russia is concentrating its forces on an attack on the eastern city of Slavyansk. Fighting for complete control of Severodonetsk continues.
