As MP Liz Cheney faces a tough re-election battle in Wyoming, she is turning to Democrats in her home state to help her chances in the Aug. 16 primary.

Cheney’s campaign sent instructions to Democrats in Wyoming on how to change their party affiliation to vote for the current congressman, The New York Times reported on Thursday. Under Wyoming law, voters must be registered as Democrats or Republicans to vote in that party’s primary election.

The instructions, also posted on Cheney’s campaign website, instruct voters to fill out a registration form and send it to their district office at least two weeks before the primary. Voters may also change their party affiliation during elections on primary day or when they request absentee voting.

“Liz is proud to represent all Wyoming residents and is working hard to win every vote,” campaign spokeswoman Jeremy Adler said in a statement to Insider on Thursday.

The call comes as some Democrats in the Red State have voiced support for Cheney’s disobedience to former President Donald Trump and plan to vote for her re-election. election season to increase their election offers. Surveys of state voter data show that voters did not make a difference in previous elections when changing parties.

“There will be Democrats who change their affiliation to vote Republican in the primary, and this is not necessarily an unusual thing to happen in Wyoming,” Joe Barbuto, chairman of the Wyoming Democratic Party, told Insider last month. “You’ll probably see more than usual going out there and voting for Liz Cheney, but it’s not enough, I don’t think I’ll save her if she’s actually in trouble.”

Cheney, a former Republican No. 3 in the House of Representatives and a re-election candidate in Wyoming, is facing a tough battle as Trump and his allies seek to oust her from Congress. Trump backed Harriet Haydjman, a local lawyer and former member of the Republican National Committee, to defeat Cheney, his staunchest Republican critic in Congress. Last month, Trump repeatedly criticized Cheney at a rally in Hayman’s election campaign in Wyoming, where his supporters pledged allegiance to the former president.

The primary election is broadly a test of Trump’s influence over the Republican Party. So far, there have been scarce polls for the race. A study by the Club for Growth, a political action committee that supports Hageman, shows that she is in charge.

As part of their efforts to oust Cheney, Trump and his allies backed efforts to change Wyoming’s laws to prevent voters from changing party affiliations on election day. Wyoming lawmakers rejected such a bill in March.

Despite Trump’s attacks on Cheney, she received support from high-ranking Republicans, including former House Speaker Paul Ryan and President George W. Bush, who raised funds on her behalf. Many Republican government and local officials in Wyoming also supported Cheney’s candidacy for re-election. The congresswoman has campaigned for upholding the Constitution and the rule of law and defending Wyoming against the Biden administration’s policies.
