Loop robberies shoot thieves but hit two “unforeseen targets” near Theater District

Two men were injured near the Loop Theater District when robberies opened fire on thieves and hit them instead, leading to the cancellation of a Sunday evening musical performance nearby.

The robbery took place in Taco Bell near Block 100 on North Wabash Street late Sunday afternoon, according to Chief of Detectives Brendan Dinichan. The victims began chasing the robbers and shooting at them, he said.

Two men, aged 27 and 55, described by Deenihan as “unforeseen targets” – were shot dead in an alley of the block.

The younger man received a gunshot wound to his right arm and the older man was hit in the head, police said. Both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said.

There are no reports of arrests. Dihan said police were watching a video of where “both groups” had gone.

Sunday evening performance of “Moulin Rouge! The musical at the 24 W. Nederlander Theater – Randolph – about two blocks from the shooting – was canceled, although the shooting was not explicitly stated as the reason.

An official statement released to the media said: “Due to an earlier disturbance in Loop on Sunday afternoon, May 1, the evening performance of” Moulin Rouge! The musical was canceled. No other Broadway productions in Chicago were affected. “

Police said they had deployed additional resources at the Theater District on Sunday night. “We will continue to monitor the area and work closely with the Cook County Sheriff’s Police to improve security in our theater area,” the department said in a statement.
