On Thursday night she claimed Mrs Truss was now the best candidate to defeat Labour, telling The Telegraph: “Liz will win us the next election.
“She is the best person to seize the opportunities of Brexit, deliver the Conservative agenda for the economy, defend free speech, defend equal opportunities and take a tough stand on illegal immigration.”
In a further boost to Ms Truss, the entire 60-member European Study Group of Conservative MPs was told on Thursday night by its chairman Marc Francois to vote for the foreign secretary.
In a letter seen by The Telegraph, Mr Francois – who has already declared for Ms Truss – indicated the group had agreed to back either Ms Braverman or Ms Truss as leader.
He said that at an ERG meeting on Wednesday, “we overwhelmingly agreed that there are two candidates that we think stand out among all the others, namely Suella Braverman and Liz Truss.
“Although almost all members of the group supported one or the other, we also collectively agreed that if only one made it to the next round, we would row behind that candidate, whoever it was.”
He added that “as a result” of Ms Braverman supporting Ms Truss “and as previously agreed – I hope that our whole group will now feel able to rally firmly behind Liz, to help deliver the vital Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, expand the opportunities offered by Brexit and secure the future of the Conservative Party.”
