Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love & Thunder fell a whopping 68% in its No. 2 weekend, earning $46 million domestically, according to Deadline . That was enough to keep God of Thunder atop the box office charts, but the drop ranks among the highest for an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (67%) and Black Widow (68%) – and that pic doesn’t have the day and date Disney+ launch excuse to go back to it as the last one.
Still, globally, the Marvel film is expected to top $500 million and has already amassed $20.5 million from Imax screens. It will be interesting to see how high this one can go in the coming weeks. Doctor Strange still managed to reach close to a billion dollars before it was released on Disney+. While that figure is a far cry from the $1.901 billion earned by Spider-Man: No Way Home , it’s still a nice chunk of change for Marvel and Disney
In other words, comic book movies are still pretty safe, even if the cracks are starting to show.

Elsewhere, Sony/3000 Pictures/Hello Sunshine’s adaptation of the Delia Owens novel Where the Crawdads Sing earned an impressive $17 million in its debut week, well above the $9-10 million forecast. The pic only cost $24 million to produce, so it’s definitely a win for the studio and proof that lower cost can be had at the multiplex.
The only other wide release was Paramount’s Paws of Fury , which stayed in sixth place with a measly $6.25 million. Meanwhile, Mrs. Focus Features’ Harris Goes to Paris earned a respectable $1.9 million from 980 theaters in its debut.
Minions remained in second place in its third weekend, accumulating another $26 million to reach a total of $262.5 million. Worldwide, the animated adventure earned $532.7 million.
Additionally, Top Gun: Maverick continues to dominate the summer movie season. After eight weeks in release, the Tom Cruise sequel has amassed a whopping $617.96 million domestically and $1.237 billion worldwide.
