Man charged after shooting police officer in downtown Roanoke

ROANOKE, VA – UPDATE 15:28:

A man has been charged in connection with an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night in downtown Roanoke, according to Virginia State Police.

Police said the incident began at 11:02 p.m. Thursday when the Roanoke Police Department responded to a report of possible shots fired in the 100 block of Elm Avenue.

When they arrived, a second shot was fired from inside the apartment, the VSP said.

Authorities said officers returned fire, leading to a four-hour standoff.

Police on the scene evacuated the building and around 3:30 a.m. Friday, when VSP said the man surrendered and was taken into custody.

Damoan Towns, 31, was charged with two counts of discharging a firearm inside a building with malicious intent, according to VSP.

During a search of the apartment, VSP said they found the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

Police said the Roanoke Police Department officers have been placed on leave per their policy and will remain on leave until the investigation is completed.

The incident is still under investigation.

Authorities say they were called to the 100 block of Elm Ave around 11pm Thursday for a report of possible shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers entered an apartment building to conduct a welfare check. A short time later, they encountered a suspect inside who began shooting, the department says.

At least one Roanoke police officer then returned fire as officers took cover outside the building, Roanoke police said.

We’re told no one was hurt in the incident.

According to Roanoke Police, there are no additional suspects and there is no threat to the public at this time.

Officials say the 100 block of Elm Avenue SW is now open to traffic after being closed.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently processing the scene of the officer-involved shooting for evidence.
