Manchester United will increase their bid for Frankie de Jong’s contract

Manchester United are ready to make an improved contract offer to Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong ahead of a potential transfer, according to a report.

Manchester United have prepared an improved contract offer for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong ahead of a potential transfer, according to a report.

The 25-year-old’s future has been up in the air all summer, with new United boss Erik ten Hag keen to reunite with his former player at Old Trafford.

The Catalan side rate the Dutchman’s quality highly but remain in a precarious financial position, leaving them open to selling one of their most valuable assets.

After several weeks of negotiations between the two clubs, a fee of around £73million was finally agreed for De Jong on Thursday, but the midfielder has so far refused to move to the Premier League.

However, the Red Devils are ready to offer improved terms in the hope of convincing De Jong to change his mind, according to Spanish publication Sport.

The report reiterates De Jong’s desire to stay at Camp Nou for the 2022-23 campaign, despite the club’s best efforts to push him towards the exit door.

However, it also states that after including the midfielder in the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States, which took off on Saturday, Barca remain keen not to push the issue too far.

Meanwhile, while the likes of Memphis Depay will also take part in training camp abroad despite the possibility of a move away from the club this summer, Barcelona boss Xavi was refused entry to the US on Saturday due to paperwork issues.
