Manchester United’s revolution finally began on Tuesday when the club confirmed their first signing of the summer with the £14.6m capture of Tyrell Malacia.

The left-back has arrived from Feyenoord and marks the first transfer under new boss Erik Ten Hag, who will be looking to get the Red Devils back into the Champions League next season.

United fans will certainly be excited by the arrival of the Netherlands international, who has been hailed for his move by former United and Feyenoord favorite Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman, whose career was linked with spells at the Rotterdam outfit, joined the Red Devils for the 2012-13 season from Arsenal and his 26 goals helped United fire to their last league title, won in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge.

Van Persie ended his career with Feyenoord after two seasons in 2019, which overlapped with Malacia’s first two years as a professional with the Dutch team.

The former striker took to Twitter on Tuesday in a video also posted by Feyenoord’s official account, wishing the 22-year-old the best of luck at Old Trafford as well as assuring Red Devils fans that their club had made an excellent signing .

“Hi Tyrrell, this is Robin, I’d like to congratulate you on your fantastic move to Manchester United,” Van Persie said in a video message posted on Twitter. “At this important point in your career.

“You showed that with self-belief, a lot of talent and hard work day in and day out, and I’ve seen that up close, dreams do come true.” So for all you Red Devils fans out there, you’re getting not only a very talented full-back, but a fantastic man.

“Be good to him, support him, in good times and bad he will give absolutely everything for you. So I’m sure it will be a great relationship together.

“On behalf of all the Feyenoord fans and the people of Feyenoord, I thank Tyrell for what he has done and for all these years from a young child when he arrived at the youth academy to this fantastic moment. You are a true example for the next generation.

“Thank you very much for all your efforts and everything you have done for our club and I wish you all the best. Good luck, man.

Malacia arrives at United as a full-back hoping to get the club back into the top four

Van Persie then added in a tweet: “Congratulations on this fantastic move @T_Malacia! 100% deserved, hard work pays off! To all @ManUtd fans, I’m sure you’ll enjoy watching Tyrrell represent this great club. A huge talent with a great fighting spirit – I’m sure he’ll fit the bill.”

Holland’s 22-year-old left-back has spent the past two days having a medical at the club’s Carrington training ground and United have confirmed he has signed a four-year deal.

A statement read: “Manchester United are pleased to confirm that Tyrell Malacia has joined the club, signing a contract until June 2026 with an option to extend for a further year.”

Malacia is United’s first signing under Ten Hag and he will join in time to go on a pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia on Friday.

Red Devils fans will be hoping the Netherlands international makes a big impact on the first team

Malacia, who has 136 caps for Feyenoord and five for Holland, said: “It feels amazing to be joining Manchester United. It’s a new chapter for me, a new league with new teammates and a great manager leading us.

“From playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, I know the qualities he has and what he demands from his players.

“Although I know I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt.

I will always be grateful to Feyenoord for everything they have given me and my family. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for them.

“I am now ready to focus on my future with United and help my new club achieve success.”

Malacia was pictured with a big smile as he signed his contract alongside Ten Hag, who will be relieved to finally have his first signing secured in the week the team set off on their pre-season tour.
