They painted many different portraits of Hadley frontman Jacob Hoghard and asked the jury to choose between a monster who forcibly raped two women or an insensitive filander who simply hurt their feelings by throwing them out after meaningless but mutually agreed sex.

“Mr. In the autumn of 2016 or so, Hoghard did not sexually assault anyone,” defense attorney Megan Saward told the jury in her closing remarks.

“You have heard Mr Hogard’s evidence that he never touched these women without their consent,” she said. “If you believe him or if he can tell the truth, you have to justify him.

Hogard, 37, pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one of sexual intercourse related to the alleged sexual contact with the first prosecutor when she was under 16.

Savard accused both women of fabricating rape stories to win the sympathy of friends and family after feeling used to Hoghard – he never expected to feel pressured to go to the police with so-called lies two years later.

“They both gave bills that just didn’t match,” she said.

His lawyer readily admitted that Hogard, drunk on early fame and fortune and popular with women for the first time, had slept across the country to fuel his insecurities and boost his ego.

His sexual encounters with a 16-year-old teenager and an Ottawa woman in his early 20s are two such encounters, she said.

Hogard now sees that he didn’t treat women very well in those days, Savard said, and was candid with the jury about his “marginal” sexual preferences as a game of spitting, calling them “whores” and “sluts.”

The carpenter from Vancouver is already a changed man, married with a young son.

“After years of celebrating the life of a celebrity, he is committed to living a life of honesty and loyalty,” Savard said. “What kind of life did Jacob Hogard leave behind – the accidental indiscriminate pursuit of sex by mutual consent, but ultimately transactional and unsatisfactory sex?”

“Or the life of a sadistic rapist who enjoys hearing no and has not taken steps to protect himself from the consequences of his violent, downright horrific crimes?”

Savard called on the jury to establish that the former was true.

“He is not a monster, he is the wrong human being, whose fame and power have given him the ability to engage in hurtful behavior, and two women have been hurt by his insensitive approach to sexual relations,” she insisted.

“But Mr. Hogard is not on trial for breaking hearts or disrespecting women. He is not judged for being a gentleman with their feelings. “

Crown lawyer Jill Whitkin told the jury that Hogard was much more than callous – he was a “qualified sexual opportunist” who would not take a “no” for an answer, becoming the monster and psychopath described by his prosecutors.

“In fact, he was these things in hotel rooms, with a mission to fulfill his sexual preferences in the face of resistance, pain and injury, regardless of a woman’s personal integrity, physical autonomy or physical suffering,” she said.

“It’s not consent.”

She called the defense theory “absurd” that both women independently made up stories of rape because they felt used by Hogard. “It’s an insult to common sense,” Whitkin said.

Their accounts are plausible in themselves, she said, but even more so given how remarkably similar they are – even though they don’t know or communicate with each other.

They were both students, one in high school, one in college, and they both received a video of Hogard having sex in the bathroom, and they both complained that he had become a different person after being in a hotel room, squeezing them. , raping them, hitting them in the face, forcing their mouths open to spit in them and calling them derogatory names.

Both women had trouble breathing and both thought they would faint or die, Whitkin continued. Everyone suffered from pain, bruising and bleeding. And after they left, everyone received a message from Hogard that he had a good time and couldn’t wait to see them again – as if nothing had happened.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is no accident. “This is not some unjust turn of events against Mr Hogard,” the prosecutor said. “Both (women) describe an unusual and striking similar violent and humiliating rape by Mr. Hogard.”

The judge is expected to give instructions to the jury on Tuesday.
