Marine, son of former Los Angeles Dodger Steve Sachs, dies in training flight crash

A Marine killed in a plane crash Wednesday in Imperial County, California, has been identified as the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers great Steve Sachs.

Captain John J. Sachs, 33, was one of five Marines killed when their Osprey fighter jet crashed during a training exercise about 20 miles northeast of Holtville.

“We mourn the loss of five Marines in the Purple Fox family,” the squadron’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. John C. Miller, told ABC7 in Los Angeles.

“Our main mission now is to care for the family members of our fallen Marines, and we respectfully demand the confidentiality of their families as they move through this difficult time.”

The Marines, who were based at Camp Pendleton, took part in an exercise with live fire in the remote unincorporated community of Glamis.

The cause of the accident remains to be clarified.

The victim’s father played in the Premier League from 1981 to 1994, winning two World Cups in his seven years with the Dodgers.

The candidate for the Hall of Fame also played with the Yankees from 1989-81, and later had a short stay with the Chicago White Sox and Auckland Athletics.
