Matthew McConaughey has returned to his grieving hometown of Uwalde, Texas, after mass shootings at Rob Elementary School killed 19 children and two teachers.
After learning about the unfolding of the horror, McConaughey posted a long statement on social media about the tragedy.
On Friday, the 52-year-old actor traveled to the small town of Uwalde in an attempt to help the bereaved to “recover”.
McConaughey was accompanied by Republican Tony Gonzalez as he comforted the community where he spent the first 12 years of his life.
The Oscar winner – whose mother Kay McCabe was a teacher at the St. Philip Episcopal School in Uwalde, according to local media – visited officials in the city’s school district.
He did not address the press during his brief visit.
“Thank you, Matthew, for helping to heal our community,” Gonzalez tweeted. “Your visit brought so many smiling faces to Uwalde. See you soon, my friend. ”
Gonzalez shared photos of McConaughey embracing staff and students during his visit.
“We appreciate Uwalde-born Matthew McConaughey helping us heal,” he said. “This week was a solemn reminder that evil exists in the world, but we will never allow it to break us.
“We will unite to be an even stronger reminder that love never fails and together we can change things,” Gonzalez added.
On Wednesday, McConaughey issued a call for action on social media to combat gun violence.
“As you all know, there was another mass shooting today, this time in my hometown of Uwalde, Texas,” the actor wrote on social media.
“Once again, we have tragically proved that we are not responsible for the rights that our freedoms give us.
McConaughey called for an end to “finding excuses and accepting these tragic realities as a status quo.”
The actor, who moved from Uwalde seven hours to Longview, Texas, when he was 11, said the endless news of gun violence in the United States was “an epidemic we can control.”
