Updates for the latest …: Paramount / Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick races over the $ 1 billion mark worldwide, becoming only the second film in the pandemic era to reach such thin air – and for the first time of Tom Cruise to the cornerstone of a career spanning 40 years. It took just 31 days for aviators to reach $ 1 billion, totaling about $ 1.006 billion worldwide by Sunday, including $ 521.7 million for the domestic market and $ 484.7 million from the international box office.
Cruz’s flying ace had already surpassed more than $ 900 million last Monday, and a few days earlier had surpassed $ 800 million to become Cruz’s biggest film in the world.
The overseas restraints of this 36-year-old sequel, directed by Joseph Kosinski, were nothing but stellar. Last weekend was down only 21%, and the current framework, at $ 44.5 million in 65 markets, is down only 26% – just phenomenal.
The presentation of TGM is proof of the work that Paramount’s distribution and marketing teams are doing behind it, while Cruz himself deserves great credit. The tireless star traveled to San Diego, Mexico City, Japan, Cannes, London and Seoul to promote the film. After his trip to Korea, he even made a pit stop at the CineEurope congress in Barcelona last Wednesday (on the way from Seoul to the set of the next Mission: Impossible), personally thanking the exhibition for its efforts.
What is even more impressive in the film, which returns Cruz to the cockpit, where he first catapulted to the world action star, is that he reaches these hypersonic heights without China or Russia in the mix. And it attracts “older” audiences, as well as younger people who weren’t even around for the first film.
To sum up, on its release in late May, Maverick lit the fires with Cruise’s biggest overseas and domestic debuts; and the following weekend was not swallowed up by the start of the Jurassic World Dominion, proving that there is room in the market for more than one big tent – which is great news for everyone after the last few years of uncertainty.
With remarkable performances this weekend, TGM still ranked first in Japan – for the fifth consecutive weekend – and fell only 15% to $ 51.1 million. The United Kingdom is behind Elvis at Warner Bros., down 18 percent from last week for a total of $ 78.7 million so far. Australia fell 24%, ranking No. 2 behind Elvis by $ 45.5 million so far. In France, the total amount so far is 38.8 million dollars. Germany’s total to date is $ 23.4 million.
