McConnell encourages Cornin to speak with Democrats to find common ground on gun laws

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Encouraged Sen. John Cornin, R-Texas, to begin talks with Democratic senators on gun laws to see if a common language could be found between the two countries.

McConnell encouraged Cornin to hold talks with Senators Chris Murphy, D-Conn., And Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., To see if he could find common ground with them on gun law after 19 children and two teachers were killed inside a Elementary School in Uwalde, Texas in Tuesday.

A Cornin spokesman confirmed that the senator had spoken to McConnell.

McConnell told CNN on Thursday that he “hoped” a bipartisan solution could be found.

“I met with Senator Cornin this morning. As you know, he went home yesterday to see family members and begin to establish the facts of this horrific massacre, and I encouraged him to speak with Senator Murphy and Senator Cinema and others who are interested in trying to achieve a result that is directly related to the problem. “I hope we can find a two-party solution,” McConnell said.

Cornin told CNN he wanted to work with Democratic senators, but said he would not use the shooting as an “excuse” to violate the Second Amendment.

“There’s a whole list of things we can look at, but I think mental health in particular, access to mental health treatment is high on that list,” Cornin said. “I think we need to be open to anything, wherever the evidence leads us. I would say that this is not an excuse for violating the rights of the Second Amendment to lawful citizens who do nothing to correct tragedies like this. “

The talks come days after Salvador Ramos is alleged to have entered Rob’s primary school Uwalde, Texasand carried out the mass shooting.
