U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is leading a Senate delegation to meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv on Saturday.
The meeting was “a powerful signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the United States Congress as well as the American people,” Zelensky said in a telegram to NBC News.
Senators John Baraso, John Cornin and Susan Collins were among the delegation, according to a video posted on social media. It is unclear whether the group is still in Ukraine.
Andriy Ermak, head of the president’s office, said senators had discussed additional sanctions against Russia and Ukraine’s hopes that the Senate would adopt a $ 40 billion aid package that has already made its way through the House of Representatives.
In the last few weeks, the United States has sent a handful of government officials to the country. Earlier this month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a US congressional delegation to meet with Zelensky, followed by First Lady Jill Biden. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Senator Steve Danes and the Republic of Victoria Sparz also traveled to Ukraine.
