Met Office issues extreme heat warning for England next week | The weather in the United Kingdom

The Met Office has issued its first extreme heat warning for next week, covering much of England. It warned of an “exceptionally hot spell on Monday and Tuesday leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure”.

“Extreme, possibly record-breaking temperatures are likely on Monday, then again on Tuesday,” the weather service said on its website.

“Nights are also likely to be exceptionally warm for the UK, particularly in urban areas. This is likely to result in widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Britain was 38.7C recorded at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens on 25 July 2019.

Earlier this week, the UK’s Health Security Agency and the Met Office issued a level 3 heat and health warning for parts of the country, requiring social and health services to take extra measures to protect the vulnerable.

A red, level 4 warning is defined on the Met Office website as being reached “when a heatwave is so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend beyond the health and social care system. At this level, disease and death can occur among the fit and healthy, not just the high-risk groups.
