Western University’s Northern Tornadoes project warns that weather conditions could provide “important ingredients” for a “likely tornado” in Ottawa and eastern Ontario on Thursday.
Environment Canada’s forecast predicts a 60% chance of rain on Thursday with the risk of a thunderstorm. The maximum temperature will be 29 C, and the humidity will make the feeling 37 degrees.
The Northern Tornadoes project has tweeted that its Day 2 forecast has meteorologists expecting enough ingredients to be collected in parts of (eastern) Ontario and (southern) Quebec (Thursday) to threaten a “likely tornado”. .
David Sils of the Northern Tornadoes project told CTV News that people in Ottawa need to “pay close attention” to Environment Canada’s warnings.
“NTP meteorologists are creating a tornado forecast to make sure our damage research teams are ready for action,” Sils said.
“Tomorrow’s forecast includes an area of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec where ingredients are likely to come together to form severe storms and a tornado threat. Given the extent of the damage in these areas of the dere on May 21, we are, of course, hoping that the guidance of the computer model and our interpretation are wrong and we will deal tomorrow without further damage.
Five CTV News host Matt Scoobbe asked about the ingredients that could cause a tornado in Ottawa.
“We have this cold front tomorrow, very warm humid air in front of it and we need to cut the wind, we need to increase the wind speed with altitude in the atmosphere to get storms that are well organized and can cause bad weather.” said Sils.
Sils says there is a “good chance” of severe storms in the area, including Toronto and Kingston, while in the Ottawa region “a tornado is more likely to occur.”
Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said Environment Canada classified the risk of a strong thunderstorm in the Ottawa and eastern Ontario region on Thursday as “medium”.
“Keep an eye on the sky and the forecast nearby and do the right thing if it explodes. My feeling is that it’s just a medium risk, “Phillips told Ottawa Now’s Newstalk 580 CFRA with Christie Cameron. “We can end up with a little wind and a short-lived thing, but without the kind of spinning clouds or distortions that will appear in your listening area.
Phillips says hot and humid temperatures in Thursday’s forecast will be “fuel in the air” as a cold front moves through the area.
“It’s going to be an undermining cold front that’s going to take this fuel, this heat and humidity, and push it up and just give it a little bit more, like the steroids, like the oumf you’re saying, so it can lead to heavy thunderstorms, ”Phillips said. “Not every strong thunderstorm has a tornado; Fortunately, I think it’s less than 10 percent. But strong winds can blow things around, you can get hail, which can be the size of a golf ball, and some torrential rains.
“Yes, there can be a pop-up tornado that can hit there or there, so we should always keep that in mind.”
Meteorologists from NTP expect tomorrow to gather enough ingredients in parts of ern ON and srn QC for the threat of a “likely tornado”, as shown in our * experimental * Outlook product for the second day. The Northern Tornadoes’ warning of a “likely tornado” comes weeks after a powerful gorge caused widespread damage on May 21.
“I know the people of Eastern Ontario are a little at risk. “You had a tornado there in September 2018, one of the most powerful tornadoes in Eastern Canada for years, and then you had one on June 2 of the following year, less than nine months, and you had a series of tornadoes,” Phillips said.
“Then, of course, you had the big gorge that came through Ontario on May 21, so I think you might feel a snake bite, and I think there’s a bit of nervousness every time it’s hard.”
The first tornado of the year in Ontario was spotted near Kasselman last month. The Northern Tornadoes project said a tornado had formed on May 15 with EFO land.
