Mohamed Salah means Real Madrid and insisted that Liverpool want success in Paris to consolidate its status as the best team in Europe.

Salah, the Liverpool striker, received the FWA Player of the Year award at a gala dinner at the Landmark Hotel in London on Thursday night after Jurgen Klopp received special permission to attend.

This is the second time the Egyptian has won the award, the first being in 2018, before Liverpool face Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kyiv.

This match became the worst moment in Salah’s career, as he suffered a shoulder injury and was sent off in the first half after being knocked to the floor by Sergio Ramos. The 29-year-old has never forgotten this episode and is desperate for the opportunity to correct it.

“They (Madrid) have more experience than us in history and know how to play,” said Salah, who leads the Golden Shoe race and is also at the top of the assists. “But we have very good players and a very good coach. In my opinion, we are the best team in Europe, perhaps in the world, and all we think about is winning.

“When you think about this situation, it’s a great thing – something really amazing to play this game. This (revenge for Kyiv) is something we think. We want to win. We want more from them. But let’s see what happens.

“The last time we lost and I got injured. I believe we can do it now. It was a difficult period after the injury and a sad situation. It was the worst moment of my career. When we lost, I thought we would get a chance to fix it and we did it next season (winning the Champions League in 2019). ‘

Salah became only the ninth player since the start of the award in 1948 to become a double winner; he may also win the PFW award again, but his goal is to help Liverpool win the four.

“It means a lot to win this award,” Salah said. “Manchester City is a really difficult team, one of the best in the world. City is always trying to win the league. I just know we’re not going to stop trying, so let’s see what happens.

Real Madrid and Liverpool will face the final of the Champions League in 2022, a repeat of the 2018 tournament, which the Spanish side won 3-1 against the Reds after Salah came out injured
