A 36-year-old man disguised as an elderly woman in a wheelchair spread a cake on Mona Lisa on Sunday. He has been referred to a police psychiatric ward following an apparent climate incident at the Louvre in Paris, Vincent Plumas, a spokesman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, told The Washington Post.

Videos of a man urging artists to “think about the Earth” after trying to break the protective glass around Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece have been circulating on the Internet. The painting remained intact, Louvre spokeswoman Nadia Refsey said in an e-mail statement confirming the incident.

This was announced by the Paris prosecutor’s office by e-mail on Monday, which is under investigation the incident after the young man was hospitalized.

A video shows guards escorting a man as he shouts in French: “Think of the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about this. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did it, “according to the Associated Press.

Other videos show staff cleaning something that looked like a white cake or cream from the armor-resistant protective glass around a 16th-century painting.

The Mona Lisa, housed in one of the world’s most famous museums, has been attacked before.

In 1911 the painting was stolen by a museum employee. In 1956, in two separate incidents, she was hit by acid and stone, after which the painting was enclosed in glass to prevent further damage. Decades later, in 2009, a woman attacked him with a ceramic cup, the AP reported.
