Monique Munoz’s family has reached an agreement for a fatal car accident

Relatives of a California woman killed by the teenage son of a multimillionaire who drove Lamborghini at more than 100 miles per hour have reached a $ 18 million deal.

Monique Munoz, a 32-year-old Hawthorne secretary, died in West Los Angeles in February 2021 when a luxury car driven by then-17-year-old son of real estate mogul James Hurry crashed into her Lexus, the Los Angeles Times reported. on Wednesday.

The crash occurred during rush hour traffic in a 35-mile zone as Munoz was returning from work at UCLA Health in Los Angeles, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The $ 18.8 million deal is related to a lawsuit filed last year in Los Angeles alleging that Chubb Insurance discriminated against the Latin American woman when calculating the amount of the death penalty, according to the newspaper.

“Insurance companies wanted a discount on the value of Monique Munoz’s life,” said her family’s lawyer, Daniel Gichi. “It was never about how much money my clients would get for them or for us, but about making sure insurance companies knew they would never get a discount.”

Brendan Houri was sentenced to nine months in a “juvenile camp” and four years probation after pleading guilty in October to aggravated manslaughter in the death of Munoz, KABC reported.

The $ 18.8 million agreement is one of the largest such sums for a single plaintiff in the event of an unlawful death in California’s history, Munoz’s lawyers said.

“It was never about money for the Munoz family, but about acknowledging Brendan Huri’s misconduct, which led to the death of their only daughter, and ensuring that he was brought to justice,” Gichi said. “Today’s agreement is proof of their efforts and is a step closer to justice.

Lawyers for Huri’s family did not return a statement asking for comment on Wednesday, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Brendan Hurry’s father, James Khurry, a Beverly Hills-based retail and real estate entrepreneur, apologized to Munoz’s family on Instagram last March.

“There are no words I can say to alleviate the pain you are experiencing … However, I want to offer my support in any way you allow me. My family and I are praying for the Munoz family. ”
