Montreal Children’s Hospital says the surge in patients is straining its emergency department, forcing families to be diverted elsewhere.
Earlier today, the hospital sent out a message asking young patients with non-urgent conditions to see their doctor or an urgent care clinic instead of coming to the emergency room.
The release said the hospital was unable to accommodate all patients amid the growing number of children seeking treatment.
Montreal Public Health says the Children’s Emergency Hospital’s occupancy rate today is 192 percent, the second highest rate of any hospital in the city.
Dr. Robert Barnes, the hospital’s associate director of professional services, says emergency room wait times are currently up to 6 p.m., and he doesn’t know when the wait is expected to decrease.
He says the hospital is not seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases, but rather infections of all kinds.
