A Kelowna driver recently shared a video of a motorcyclist splitting lanes on Glenmore Road.
Dashcam video shows traffic traveling on Glenmore Rd. when the motorcycle rider decided to weave through the traffic to catch up with several cars.
“This is Glenmore southbound approaching Bernard Ave., the footage is time stamped and my speed is also shown. The speed limit here is 50 km/h.’
The driver did not want his name used, but told Castanet he was driving on Glenmore Rd. as part of his journey.
Lane-splitting is popular and legal in some countries, but not in Canada, according to the Confederation of Canadian Motorcyclists. “A number of groups continue to petition their local and provincial governments to consider making lane splitting and lane filtering legal.”
The practice is used to allow drivers to bypass traffic jams, save time and may also be safer than stopping behind stationary vehicles, some motorcyclists say.
Dashcam video shows the motorcycle speeding up and passing between two cars that appear to be obeying the speed limit before accelerating to a stop light.
RCMP tell Castanet that this type of driving is risky not only for motorcyclists, but for other drivers as well.
“We are always concerned when driver(s) act like this and put themselves and others at risk,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Judith Bertrand.
The person who shared the video with us said: “my comments are worth no more than anyone else’s, but I don’t think anyone in our community would support this kind of driving.”
