Mount Pearl mayor accuses protesters of disrespectful behavior

Relations between Mount Pearl and the striking workforce have soured, with the mayor accusing some of the picketers of disrespectful behavior.

The more than 200 workers have been on strike for a week, but the two sides are not at the negotiating table.

Mayor Dave Acker says picketing has gone too far and he’s calling on CUPE Local 2099 to tone things down. He told VOCM Open Line with Tim Powers that some members are harassing female managers and photographing them even outside of city property.

Mayor Acker says some of the women are getting worried and nervous. He says once city managers leave City Hall and clear the property, they should be able to return to their vehicles in peace.

CUPE local president Ken Turner says he first heard about the shooting of city managers Wednesday morning on VOCM Open Line.

He notes that the city has hired security and they are filming the area almost all the time. He adds that if a complaint had been filed, the union would have looked into it immediately.

Many sports and entertainment programs were canceled because of the strike.
