Several people were treated at a site where people were enjoying Gallup’s centennial intertribal ceremonial celebration, New Mexico State Police said in a Twitter post. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
The driver and passengers were taken into custody, officials said, and state police are investigating the incident.
Thursday night’s gala parade was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in downtown Gallup, according to the event’s website. The parade was part of a day-long celebration of Native American culture and heritage, according to an event release. Video footage taken by witness Sean Justice shows a group of people performing in the street as the crowd erupts in screams, with people jumping and running in the opposite direction of what appears to be a moving car.
Another video, shot by witness Keisha Joe, shows what appears to be an SUV that drove through the parade. A damaged car with a crushed front door is on the sidewalk in front of the SUV.
Navajo National Council Chairman Seth Damon released a statement saying, “The Navajo Nation stands firm against any acts of violence and sends prayers for the protection of those affected. This was a traumatic and challenging event for many, especially our youth, adults and our veterans who acted quickly.”
“Keep Gallup in your prayers tonight as we come together in faith and strength for one anther. May the Creator and the Holy People bless you all tonight as we move forward together,” he said.
