Two Los Angeles residents were arrested Friday and are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in a multi-county crime spree.
“Malik Pat is a cold-blooded serial killer,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “He executed innocent people and shot others and his behavior and the crimes he was involved in literally, just sent chills down my spine.”
Pat, 20, will be charged with three counts of murder under special circumstances, three counts of robbery, two counts of attempted murder and armed robbery, according to the DA’s office. Prosecutors say Pat killed a homeless man on July 9 after robbing a 7-Eleven store before fatally shooting two others in separate incidents on July 11.
Pat is also charged with an armed robbery at a donut shop and shooting a man in the face at another 7-Eleven that same day.
Alleged accomplice Jason Payne, 44, has been charged with three counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery in the July 11 crime spree.
Payne could not be charged in the alleged murders related to the robberies because of a change in the state’s natural and probable cause law, according to Spitzer.
Pat and Payne were arrested on July 15 and are believed to be neighbors. Spitzer said the two additional alleged robberies in the cities of San Bernardino and Ontario will be handled in San Bernardino County and the two men will be charged in connection with those alleged crimes after the Orange County case is concluded.
Patt is expected to be held without bail following Tuesday’s arraignment. CNN is currently trying to contact lawyers for both.
