An employee of the National Arts Center (NAC) is recovering from a cardiac arrest brought on by smoke inhalation from a fire that broke out in the building on Friday night.
Ottawa firefighters received a call about the fire just before 10:30 p.m. Fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene.
The fire started in a linen dryer in the centre’s kitchen laundry room on Friday night, Annabelle Cloutier, spokeswoman for the NAC, told CBC News in an email.
“The fire was extinguished and did not spread further,” Cloutier said.
One employee, a 51-year-old man, went into cardiac arrest due to smoke inhalation, according to the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
Paramedics at the scene tried to reverse the effects of smoke inhalation and took him to a hospital, the service said.
As of Saturday morning, the man was recovering and the NAC hoped he would be released from the hospital soon, Cloutier said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
No performances were affected by the fire and scheduled performances will continue as scheduled this weekend, Cloutier said, adding that 1 Elgin restaurant will also be open for dinner.
