Naval camp commander removed for “loss of confidence”

GREAT LAKES, IL – The head of the US Navy training camp was fired last week after senior commanders lost confidence in his ability to command.

Captain Jeffrey Sandin was relieved of command of the Recruits Training Command at the Great Lakes Naval Station from the rear. Jennifer Couture on Saturday, according to a brief statement from the Navy.

Sandin was reassigned to Naval Training Command Headquarters, while Captain Curtrex Brooks, Chief of Naval Training Command, took over command of the Naval Training Command, the only naval training camp.

“Captain Brooks will remain commander until a deputy is identified,” said a spokesman for the naval education and training commander. Brian Wierzbicki told Patch.

Sandin took command of the Rookie Training Command in May 2021, taking over from Captain Eric Thors, who spent nearly three years in the role. He is a native of Bloomville, New York, enlisted in the Navy in 1986. He was appointed in 1997, received a bachelor’s degree in 2003 and a master’s degree in 2016, according to a statement announcing his appointment. .

Sandin will not be subject to additional discipline and his removal from command is not the result of a specific investigation, Vejbicki told the Navy Times.

In addition to Sandin, the Navy has fired at least three other commanding officers in the past week “due to a loss of confidence” in their ability to command effectively.
