Demand for monkeypox vaccines has outpaced supply in New York and Washington, two of the first cities in the United States to offer inoculation against the virus.

The DC Department of Health has announced that 300 monkey vaccine meetings will be available on Tuesday and Thursday, but those seats have already been booked by noon on Monday.

New York also began offering the Jynneos vaccine at the Sexual Health Clinic in Chelsea, but all meetings were filled by Monday.

Eligibility in both New York and the District of Columbia was limited to gays and bisexual men because they were disproportionately affected by monkeypox. DC also offered the vaccine to prostitutes and staff at the sexual activity facility.

New York has registered at least 48 cases of monkeypox, while DC has registered 16 cases.

Health officials said earlier this month that the U.S. government had 72,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine in stock.

The Jynneos vaccine is given in two doses four weeks apart. The individual is considered fully vaccinated after the second dose.

The United States has about 100 million doses of an older smallpox vaccine, ACAM2000, but it has potentially serious side effects, and CDC officials say there will be “serious discussion” before it is used.
