Motorists in New York have good reason to grumble this week, as gasoline prices across the state have reached all-time highs – with pump costs rising well above record national prices.
In the New York subway area, the average price of a gallon of natural gas rose to $ 4,671 on Tuesday – the highest in history – with some individual stations charging more than $ 6, according to AAA.
Average prices have risen more than $ 1.50 a gallon from the same day a year ago.
Nehal Sayed, an employee who answered the phone at a Shell station on the Upper East Side, said customer complaints were rising along with high prices.
“Yes, people complain every day about the high prices,” Sayed told The Post. “You say I can’t believe the prices every day, high, high and high, and I don’t know how we can afford that.”
“I have been working at a gas station for more than 20 years, but still at the highest price. I have never seen him, “he added.

The average for the state of New York is $ 4,569. The average jumped above the $ 5 threshold in New York County, but was slightly lower in outlying areas such as Queens ($ 4,673 on average per gallon) and Brooklyn (on average $ 4,640 per gallon).
Mark Serbar, a worker at a Shell gas station in East Harlem, noted that customer traffic has slowed in recent days as prices rise. He added that customers have not yet complained more than usual, although he acknowledged that “they may do so later”.
Asked if he expected prices to rise, Serbar said: “I guess so. I hope not. It depends on the oil market. “
An employee named Raj at a Mobil station in Long Island City had a harsher assessment of the situation.
“Yeah, man, that’s a hell of a $ 4.49 regular, what are you going to do?” No gas, no eating [or] I’m buying groceries, aren’t I? “

Gas prices are ahead of the national average, setting a new record this week as supply chain disruptions and the war between Russia and Ukraine destroy global energy markets. The previous record was set in March.
The average national price per gallon of gas was $ 4,374 – an increase of 5 cents overnight.
AAA’s Northeastern Region spokesman Patti Artesa said the price of oil was “more than half the price of the pump” – which means that prices will rise if oil continues to crawl above $ 100 a barrel.

Oil prices soared last week after the European Union said it was considering banning Russian supplies in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
