New York subway driver dies after pants stuck in car door

A New York City subway driver died Thursday after his pants caught on the doors of a Q train late Wednesday as he exited, causing him to be dragged across the platform and then off the rails, police said.

The episode took place shortly before midnight at Avenue M in Meadwood, Brooklyn, and the man, who police said looked 30 years old and who was not identified, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center.

The Metropolitan Transport Service, which operates the subway, said the service had been disrupted between Kings Highway and Prospect Park by about 3:30 p.m.

Police said it was unclear whether the man was hit by a second train that entered the station shortly after the crash.

The subway system is plagued by safety concerns after the number of vehicles dwindled during the pandemic. A Goldman Sachs employee, Daniel Enriquez, was shot and killed on the same Q line in late May. The killing came just days after authorities announced a milestone: 3.6 million subway rides in one day, a record since the pandemic era.

In April, a gunman fired 33 shots at Train N traveling through Sunset Park during a morning trip, injuring 10 passengers. And in January, a Deloitte employee, Michelle Go, was killed after being pushed onto the tracks at Times Square.
