News from Vancouver: Kitsilano boating accident sends 7 to hospital

A boat had to be towed to shore in Vancouver on Saturday and seven people on board were taken to hospital, according to first responders.

Vancouver Police Department Marines and the Coast Guard were called to the water between Third Beach and the Lions Gate Bridge for a vessel experiencing “mechanical problems,” according to spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison.

“The captain and some passengers were overcome by fumes and required medical attention,” he wrote in an email, adding that the boat was towed to Vanier Park to meet with paramedics.

British Columbia Emergency Medical Services said seven land ambulances were dispatched to Coast Guard Base Kitsilano at 3:12 p.m. to treat multiple patients.

“Paramedics treated seven patients, two in serious condition and five in stable condition, and transported them to hospital,” it said in an emailed statement.
