Ike Equeremadou, 60, and Beatrice Nouaneca Equeremadou, 55, have been charged with conspiracy to organize another person’s exploitation trip, including organ harvesting, police said.
Ekveremadou is an opposition senator in the southern state of Enugu and also a former vice president of the senate.
Police said they had been warned of the alleged plan following reports of possible crimes under modern slavery law. The affected child was taken to a safe place and work is underway to provide additional support.
The couple appeared in the magistrates’ court of Uxbridge in London, where the court was told that the child involved was a 15-year-old boy, the BBC reported.
The prosecution told the court that the consent of the chief prosecutor was needed to continue the case due to problems with jurisdiction, the BBC added, and the couple was left in custody until their next court appearance on July 7.
Neither Ekveremadou nor his wife were found for comment.
