NEWARK — Nine people were hospitalized after being shot Thursday night in Newark, authorities said.
All the victims — eight adults and one juvenile — are in stable condition at two Newark hospitals, the city’s acting director of public safety, Raoul Malave, said in a statement.
He said police responded to the shooting in the 200 block of Clinton Place, a residential area in Newark’s Weequahic neighborhood, at 6:19 p.m. Authorities learned of the attack through the ShotSpotter system, a technology that detects gunfire and alerts police.
Newark police officials said five of those shot made it to a hospital on their own. They said a car stolen in Jersey City appeared to be at the center of the incident, but did not provide details. Police said the youngest victim was 17 and the oldest 68.
On Thursday night, a police car was still stationed outside the convenience store where the shooting happened five hours earlier. The metal security bars of the 809 Supermarket store were removed and locked. A gray hood soaked in what appeared to be blood lay on the pavement out front.
Mr. Malave did not release information about the motive for the attack or the number of attackers.
