Negotiations with the European Union to resolve the Brexit crisis in Northern Ireland have stalled, Liz Truss said, as she justified the government’s plans to cancel parts of a deal it signed three years ago.
The European Union will launch lawsuits against Britain tomorrow for violating the terms of the withdrawal agreement after Boris Johnson unveiled legislation to unilaterally limit Brussels’ influence in Northern Ireland.
The foreign minister said today that the government had no choice but to act after the EU refused to change the text of the protocol during eighteen-month talks. Trus said the EU had no excuse for legal action, arguing that the UK’s plans would not put the bloc at a disadvantage.
